Abstract
This is a reflection which aims to understand the changes happened in the identity of a riverside community. The study focus an unusual event happened in Pedro Afonso (TO): the "liberation" of the donkeys as a result of the sanitized water supply system inauguration, dispensing the donkeys and their conductors. It was a very pompous event, in which the newspaper, television and the State governor were present, in plain Military Period, in 1968. The end of the use of donkeys to the every day activities changed the daily life in Pedro Afonso, contributing to a change in the population's way of life.
