Abstract

A large solid angle detector consisting of a hin crystal of anthracene coupled to a fast photomultiplier by an air-filled light guide has been designed and constructed for use in experiments which require the detection of electrons of positrons from the internal pair decay of excited nuclear levels in coincidence with nuclear reaction products. The primary design considerations were high efficiency for electrons and low sensitivity to γ rays. In tests involving the first excited 0 + state of 16O an efficiency of (31.9 ± 0.6)% was observed; γ rays from the nearby second excited state were detected with a sensitivity approximately 100 times smaller.
