Abstract
A focusing type of Cherenkoc chamber is described, in which an image intensifier is used to record the ring images. A test experiment with 16 GeV/ c pions at the CERN proton synchrotron has demonstrated that the velocity resolution is δβ = 6 × 10 −7 for single pions. The precision in determining the mean velocity of the particle beam is limited by a systematic error δβ = ± 2 × 10 −7. From the results of this experiment, it can be concluded that a similar chamber should distinguish protons and kaons of equal momentum up to 200 GeV, with high counting efficiency and an angular acceptance of 5 mrad.
