Abstract

In the 1940s and 1950s, a land conflict took place in northern Parana state, Brazil with nationwide impact, named by the contemporary press as the “Porecatu war”. The movement took body and shape from the intervention by militants and directors of the Brazilian Communist Party, who were able to organize a land struggle using a wide net of sympathizers, including armed struggle. The movement was violently stifled by the police and repression forces, leading to its demise. Consequently, thousands of peasants were deserted and expelled from their lands, displaced to other areas of the state and Brazil.
