Abstract
This article describes the cotton production and utilization in the state of Parana from 1970 to 1999 and the textile pole in Maringa region, northern Parana State, Brazil. This study was based on several primary sources and many publications. In the early 1980s textile industries in Parana focused on cotton cleaning, even though local production had the capacity to continue the manufacturing of cotton. By the mid 1980s some spinning industries were established and supported by agro-industry cooperatives. Cotton production started to decrease after 1996, decreasing the needs of the spinning industries. This decrease of cotton as a primary resource interrupted the chain of industrialization. The State of Parana, which traditionally used to export cotton, started to import it in the mid 1990s.

O objetivo do presente trabalho foi de apresentar a produção e a utilização de algodão no Estado do Paraná, no período de 1970 a 1999, assim como descrever como ocorreu a formação do pôlo têxtil, tendo o município de Maringá, Estado do Paraná, como centro maior desta iniciativa. No início da década de 80, as indústrias têxteis atuavam, exclusivamente, no beneficiamento do algodão e foi favorecida pela hegemonia paranaense, em nível nacional, na produção desta cultura até 1995. O declínio da produção algodoeira começou a ser sentido a partir de 1996, para níveis inferiores às necessidades das fiações e acabou por desmantelar o projeto de constituição de uma cadeia têxtil a partir da abundância de matéria-prima, apoiado no sistema cooperativista.
