Abstract

This article aims to analyze the actions of public agents aimed at combating contemporary slave labor on agribusiness farms located in the interior of Piauí and Maranhão, between 1985 and 1995. Initially, we address the conditions to which the workers were subjected. enslaved workers caught during inspections, highlighting the exhausting working hours, debt mechanisms and the precariousness of accommodation and food provided by companies. Next, we demonstrate the attitudes of scouts and managers of rural properties committed to compromising inspections, as well as the articulations established between different institutions to make operations viable and overcome recurring difficulties in the historical context, characterized by the lack of effective policies to combat the problem. Regarding these questions, we sought support in the research of Ricardo Rezende Figueira (2004), Ângela de Castro Gomes and Regina Beatriz Guimarães Neto (2018). Furthermore, we made use of a variety of empirical materials, such as: newspaper sources, mainly the newspapers Diário do Povo and O Estado, inspection reports and publications from the International Labor Organization (ILO).
