Abstract

Summary One of the main requirements to be met by Computer‐assisted Instruction (CAI) systems is adapting the process of teaching to the individual needs of the student. At the present stage the idea of creating knowledge‐managed CAI systems is a reasonable compromise between the didactic effectiveness and the author's labour expense. In this paper the application of planning techniques in knowledge‐managed CAI systems is specified and further developed by defining at a conceptual level the general structure of such a system and the interaction between the separate elements of the system. A generalized algorithm is presented of the operation of the sub‐systems (planning and executive) realising global management of instruction ‐ within a CAI course.
