Abstract
Abstract Merton's anomie theory is seriously examined as theory. Various lines of criticism against the theory and the serious misinterpretations that exist among writers are reviewed. An effort is made to present a clear formulation of Merton's anomie theory to clarify these misinterpretations. Merton's strategy of the middle range is executed, and his discursive statements are formalized. Implicit concepts are given explicit definitions and are systematically incorporated into propositions. Drawing from relevant research and theory, Merton's propositions are supplemented along lines that he suggested in his various works. The result is a clear and testable theory which incorporates more social psychological variables than is commonly recognized.
