Abstract

The provision of industrial training is required to be cost-effective. AI-based teaching systems are viewed by commerce and industry as yet more expensive to create than materials based on current computer-based training technologies. This makes them an unattractive alternative, or even additional, training tool. The requirement to create a separate student model, in addition to describing the subject matter to be taught, adds further to the cost of producing teaching materials. This paper describes how a student model may be generated automatically from a representation of subject knowledge, thus providing domain independent student modelling and a more cost-effective approach to Artificial Intelligence-based training materials. The student modelling of a commercially available training shell based on this approach (ATR trainer) is described in detail.
