Abstract
After storage at 1 °C celery (Apium graveolens var. dulce, L.) grown in the Bradford muck area of Ontario developed a black discoloration of the stalks which appeared outwardly in a striped pattern along the vascular strands. In cross section the vascular strands were discolored and appeared blackened. An atmosphere of 3% O2 plus 2% CO2 almost completely controlled the disorder. Ethylene and pre-storage treatment with sodium hypochlorite had little or no influence on the occurrence of the disorder but there was some indication of difference in cultivar susceptibility.Key words: Apium graveolens var. dulce. L., controlled atmosphere, ethylene, sodium hypochlorite, celery
