Abstract
An unusual sialogycolipid containing glucose, galactose, arabinose, and N-acetylneuraminic acid in the ratio 1:4:1:2 was isolated from the total lipid extract of hepatopancreas of the starfish Patiria pectinifera. The structure of the sialoglycolipid was elucidated by total and partial acid hydrolysis, methanolysis, periodate oxidation, methylation analysis and chromium trioxide oxidation. THe sialogylcolipid has a non-branched octasaccharide chain with terminal arabinofuranose resudue, both sialic acid residues are located in the inner part of the carbohydrate chian and glycosylated at the position 4 by galactose residues. One of the N-acetylneuraminic acid residues is methylated at the position 8. The long-chain bases are C 16-, C 17- and C 18-phytosphinogosines with both branched and linear chains. Only α-hydroxy fatty acids are found C 22-, C 23- and C 24-α-hydroxy fatty acids represent above 90% of the total fatty acids.
