Abstract

This paper proposes a new type of square patch antenna where CPW feed is employed for bandwidth enhancement. The proposed antenna has a wide bandwidth, meanwhile possessing low profile. Coaxially differential feed is here replaced by CPW to excite the TM 11 mode of square patch antenna. Besides, an extra non-radiative mode caused by CPW can be also generated approximately to the aforementioned TM 11 mode, thus achieving bandwidth enhancement. Stable conical-beam radiation pattern is realized inside the whole operating band. Different from the traditional patch antenna fed by coaxial probe, the proposed one is much easier to be integrated with other microwave components due to the advantage of CPW. The proposed antenna has a simple structure with an attractive low profile of 0.0129 wavelengths. Simulation results show that the introduced antenna achieves an impedance bandwidth of 90 MHz, covering from 2.42 to 2.51 GHz, which is exactly corresponding with WLAN band.
