Abstract
This review presents a comparison on the use of SIMS and AES for surface analysis. Topics covered include instrumentation and analytical procedures, sample destruction and charging effects, information depth and depth profiling, qualitative and quantitative analyses, lateral resolution and detection limits. From this discussion, guidelines for the selection of the most appropriate technique should become apparent.
