Abstract

A comparison is made between radiative line strengths, or more precisely the square of matrix elements of the electron position vector, calculated fully relativistically and with two quasirelativistic approaches. The calculations are made for all transitions nlj-n'l'j' with n and n' ⩽ 3 and for several transitions with n and/or n' = 4 in hydrogenic ions with nuclear charge number Z = 30, 50, 70 and 90, as well as the nonrelativistic limit. The purpose of the work is to find the optimum quasirelativistic approach to use for rapid calculation of line strengths and collision strengths for highly charged ions and to obtain some indication of the accuracy of the approach.
