Abstract
The relation between Dirac and quasirelativistic methods of calculation of line strengths in hydrogen-like atoms and the problem of finding the optimum quasirelativistic approach, discussed recently by Mohanty and Sampson [Physica Scripta 35, 645 (1987)], is clarified. We demonstrate that an approach based on an improved quasirelativistic theory of atoms gives in the hydrogen-like case exactly the same results as the Dirac equation and therefore is the optimum one in the sense of the Mohanty and Sampson criterion.
