Abstract

Schumacher (Phys. Rev. 126 1679 (1962)) calculated the transition pressure and volume change of the NaCl phase up to the transition for potassium chloride and rubidium iodide by assuming equal Born repulsive parameters for both the NaCl and CsCl structures. This assumption is shown to lead to a gross overestimate of the mechanical work in the transition and to a misrepresentation of the pressure-volume relationship of the CsCl phase. It is concluded that a proper Born-model treatment of polymorphic transitions in ionic crystals requires different repulsive parameters for the two crystals structures. (D.C.L.)
