Abstract

The difficulty of combining general art courses with specialized courses is one of the biggest obstacles to developing general art courses at engineering universities. The course “Design and Humanities—Contemporary Public Art” emphasized teaching based on characteristics of different engineering disciplines, with public art, the most representative multi-disciplinary art, being the starting point. The objectives of this course were determined according to the Discipline Based Art Education (DBAE) theory. The content of this course was designed based on typology and several teaching assessment methods were developed. A quantitative analysis was conducted to examine the outcome of this course. The results demonstrate that engineering majors are able to efficiently acquire art knowledge and certain design skills and this is a win-win for the development of both specialized and general courses.
