Abstract
In this paper, we present a brief overview of literacy and multiliteracies studies in Brazil, in particular research dealing with the relationships among reading, text production, multimodality, media and education. We also present comments on the results of recent research on literacy skills of the Brazilian population, such as the National Indicator of Functional Literacy and the National Examination of Secondary Education. We conclude arguing that those who work in Brazilian education and literacy practices still have a long way to go until they manage successful practices to improve and foster literacy widely.
