Abstract
Abstract The opening and closing scenes in Of Mice and Men occur in an idyllic setting, with signs of wildlife, particularly a little water snake and a heron who in the end takes the snake as prey. Echoing the theme established in the novel's title, Of Mice and Men, the scenes encapsulate the tragedy of mentally handicapped Lennie. Overall, the animal images throughout testify to the human condition as well as the animal.
