Abstract

A polarimeter for measuring the fast neutron elastic scattering analysing powers and differential cross sections is described. It is capable of measurement at 12 angles simultaneously and in all can measure at 23 angles ranging from 13° to 167°. A description of data collection and control systems is also given. Measurements made scattering 3.0 MeV neutrons from bismuth are presented. The results are compared with previous measurements and illustrate, for analysing powers the improved definition of the angular distributions resulting from the larger number of data points. Improvement in detection efficiency calibration, compared with simpler polarimeter systems, has resulted in better accuracy in the differential cross section measurement.
