Abstract

The aim of this chapter is to assess the state of contemporary industry in Fukuoka Prefecture with a particular focus on the role of traditional craft industries, often known as TCI. In 2000 the Committee on Traditional Craft Industries described TCI as 'not only the face of Japanese industry but representative of the culture of Japanese manufacturing'. The objective is rather to present some representative case studies to show the impact that traditional craft industries have had on modern industry in this region. To help place this theme in some context the chapter begins with an overview of industry in Fukuoka Prefecture today. Then, it introduces some of the key traditional craft industries for which the area is known. Finally, by surveying some large firms in Fukuoka Prefecture, the chapter explores some of the ways in which these longstanding traditions continue to exert an influence on contemporary society and culture. Keywords:culture; Fukuoka Prefecture; Japanese industry; Kurume; traditional craft industries (TCI)
