Abstract
Maintenance is an important aspect of safety and health program. Insufficient or improper maintenance can result in accidents, property damage, and equipment breakdown. The principles of maintenance management include organization, motivation, and control. Preventive maintenance is a program of mutual support creating safer conditions, eliminating costly delays and breakdowns, and prolonging equipment life. Insufficient or improper maintenance can result in accidents, property damage, and equipment breakdown. Improperly maintained hazards can surface and production can be adversely affected even where safety and health are prime considerations in the planning and implementation of a safety and health program. Preventive maintenance is the orderly, scheduled activity by the maintenance organization to prevent equipment breakdown; to prolong the useful life of equipment and buildings; and to reduce the potential for injury, illness, and property damage. Like preventive maintenance, housekeeping is a shared responsibility. Good housekeeping requires planning, supervision, and constant attention. Maintenance personnel and the Safety and Health Committee must pay attention to the deficiencies that they note during their inspections.
