Abstract

This chapter discusses many of the programming and expert system management techniques employed by knowledge engineers working in commercial artificial intelligence. These methods often have evolved as a result of the unique demands of the expert system development process. Expansion journals are files used to collect user suggestions for the expansion of an expert system. They can be thought of as the first step in automating the knowledge acquisition process. Expansion journals usually are implemented by providing users with a command callable from anywhere in the expert system, such as Opinion, Comment, or Question. The user can then give this command to create a separate window in a corner of the screen that collects comments and suggestions.
