Abstract

This chapter discusses the costing, metrics, and specification. From a business perspective, cost projection can be the first concern of anyone considering the development of an expert system. In any corporate environment, cost considerations clearly will carry substantial weight, often becoming the salient criterion on which the decision to develop an expert system is made. Cost estimation, then, becomes one of the concerns for a knowledge engineer. Ordinarily the initial approach to a problem is to isolate the stages of system development and the constraints that will affect project costs. From a distance, development, implementation, and maintenance appear as the larger stages, but within each stage are further divisions. Cost concerns span all levels of system construction.
