Abstract

This chapter discusses the role of the knowledge engineer as a taxonomist. An expert system is generally classified by paradigm, purpose, and domain. Paradigm refers to the type of problem the expert system solves. Purpose is the reason behind the system's development. Domain refers to the field in which the expert system will operate. Rules in monitoring, anomaly detection, and predictive systems are frequently used to compare patterns of behavior inductive systems can be used to discover those patterns of behavior. Frames can then be used to represent the patterns of behavior to be discovered or examined by the rules. Design systems often are forward chaining because they require a good deal of data before they can begin to propose reasonable designs. Rules in design systems often refer to the ways in which a task can or cannot be performed, that is, the syntactical requirements that should be adhered to when creating FORTRAN source code.
