Abstract

The security control center (SSC) cannot operate properly without being able to communicate with personnel in the field and be able to remotely control various functions, such as gates, doors, and intercoms. Intercoms and controls are basic to the SCC operation and yet are seldom talked about—possibly because the subject is somewhat low tech or appear to be obvious. This chapter addresses the typical systems and many of the common pitfalls that often occur with the security functions. It is important to consider that the goal of the SCC is to provide the same level of professionalism as would be expected if an officer were stationed at each remote location that the intercom and controls replaced. The advantage of the SCC handling as many issues as appropriate is to save money. A single operator in the SCC can perform the function of many officers at remote points. A typical intercom is designed to operate a remote intercom station using the speaker as a speaker as well as a microphone. This is referred to as a “talk back” speaker.
