Abstract

This chapter discusses the future trends of electronic security. Trends provide some guidance toward new products and applications, but the actual products may well turn out to be something that no one realizes they needed—just like a copy machine. There are trends such as privacy concerns that impact security products. The issues associated with safeguarding Social Security numbers bring this issue into perspective. There are several basic types of identity theft: true name theft, account takeover, and mass data compromise. As far as trends for the future of security electronics, one fact that cannot be denied is that every component and system will become more intelligent. The capability of motion detectors continues to get better. Nuisance alarms are reduced, the detection improves, and the price drops. This is accomplished through newer technology, which incorporates more processing capability. Cameras are providing better quality images with less sensitivity to unwanted lighting that can adversely affect the picture. There are Internet Protocol (IP) cameras that can be connected directly to a network.
