Abstract

The chapter focuses on AT&T's STARLAN. In May, 1988, AT&T announced the STARLAN 10 Network. The STARLAN Network Product line of software and hardware components serves as the foundation for the AT&T workgroup computing platform. The new AT&T STARLAN 10 Network provides 10 Mbps Ethernet, over unshielded twisted pair and fiber optic cabling. In addition, it provides connectivity for existing Ethernet segments using thick or thin coaxial cable. Currently, the IEEE has established a 10BASE-T Task Force, which is charged with defining a standard for 10 Mbps Ethernet over unshielded twisted pair. The AT&T STARLAN 10 proposal is viewed as closely following the emerging 10BASE-T Draft Industry Standard. The STARLAN Network operating at 1 Mbps over unshielded twisted pair is designed primarily for small and medium sized businesses and small departments within large organizations. It offers a low-cost entry into networking, with simple installation and easy, modular growth.
