Abstract
From its founding in 1986, Madge Networks has concentrated on providing token-ring products that are compatible and interoperable with those of IBM. To that end, Madge has developed a full line of hardware and software token-ring products. These include network interface cards for industry standard architecture (ISA) and Micro Channel computers, 8- and 4-station access units, a ring repeater, smart software, token-ring management software, and cables. By designing in compatibility, Madge ensures that its products can be mixed with products from other suppliers, particularly IBM. Madge's approach permits customers and OEMs or licensees of the company's technology to use those components that are of interest to them, whether they be cable access units, adapter cards, or NETBEUI protocols. To achieve its goal of compatibility and interoperability, the company developed an independent NETBIOS and Logical Link Control (802.2) network protocol software. In early 1989, Madge improved the performance of a token-ring by introducing a new generation of smart token-ring adapters-Smart Ringnodes. This chapter describes the various token-ring products offered by Madge.
