Abstract

This chapter focuses on PC LAN hardware. It discusses PC LAN bus structure objectives, cost and types of the media for local networks, , network interface design trade-offs, and the PC LAN adapter intelligence.. At the physical layer, it is desirable to be able to connect PCs together across distances of at least 1,000 feet. It would also be convenient to be able to interface to any standard PC I/O channel such as the expansion slots found on the IBM PC, AT, Microchannel PS/2, Macintosh SE, Macintosh II, and so on. A personal computer network should be flexible enough to attach new technology, especially the new-generation PCs based on the 32-bit Intel 80386 processor. This serves to underscore the importance of an open system, as highly proprietary systems may be difficult to attach to the established PC LAN.
