Abstract
This chapter provides an overview of the category of “active and intelligent packaging materials” when used in contact with food. This chapter begins with defining and identifying active and intelligent packaging materials. Next, this chapter summarizes how these materials are regulated by various jurisdictions around the world, with a particular focus on the scheme in place in the European Union (EU) due to the existence of specific legislation in the EU that is dedicated to this category of materials. Finally, this chapter briefly discusses the somewhat unique regulatory and jurisdictional issues that sometimes arise with the use of active and intelligent packaging materials in contact with food.
