Abstract

Domestic terrorism, mostly through violent extremist mass casualty events, remains a significant risk to local municipality emergency responders. In addition to being casualty-producing events, viewing them as important criminal investigations and ensuring the maximal preservation of life while balancing evidence preservation are important considerations. The Department of Justice through the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) serves as the lead agency in investigating domestic terrorist events, and various Department of Defense units and agencies can assist. This chapter describes many of those available assets and methods of employment and their incorporation within the existing incident command system.
