Abstract

Although chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a significant public health issue for patients of all ages, there is a limited body of literature addressing the management of CKD in older adults. Most health care practitioners would agree, however, that caring for older adults with CKD presents unique challenges because of the substantial differences between older and younger patients with this condition. In this chapter, we will provide an overview of a broad number of issues related to providing care for the older adults with CKD. We have included discussions about the emerging debate rejecting current definitions used to define CKD, detailed information about common geriatric syndromes (e.g., functional decline, cognitive impairment), and their relationship with renal disease and treatment, and introduced the role of palliative dialysis and comprehensive conservative renal care.
