Abstract

There are several abandoned wells all around the world which have high thermal potential. Such a great potential, in addition to energy and environmental issues, has been leading to an increasing tendency toward heat extraction from the abandoned wells. Considering the fact that modeling plays an important role in the design of technologies for heat recovery, in this chapter, simulation and thermodynamic modeling of heat extraction from abandoned wells are discussed. It covers the ways to determine the well temperature, properties of materials, temperature distribution in the wellbore, as well as continuity, momentum, and energy governing equations. Moreover, the different possibilities for used mesh are introduced, and a review on the conducted studies is done with the aim of providing broad insight into the current trends and advances.
