Abstract

This chapter concerns corrosion in natural environments where micro-organisms are present in the medium. It describes the micro-organisms present inside biofilms attached at the interface between nuclear power plant components and the operating medium. Microbiologically influenced corrosion (MIC) of stainless steel, carbon steel and other metals is presented, and examples of MIC are given, in particular for nuclear waste containers. The chapter then considers tools to study this particular corrosion and, finally, describes specific protection measures that can be taken against microbial corrosion.
