Abstract

The components that comprise the typical electronic commerce solution are web clients, web server software, commerce server software, connectivity tools, and back-end systems. Web server software publishes hypermedia documents on the fly for the web client interface. Commerce server software generates and supports storefront functionality for merchants. The Web server software and the commerce server software reside on the same hardware component. Customers access the vendor site via web clients. Back-end systems, which typically already exist in an organization, require a connectivity tool to link them to the server software. This linking allows companies to leverage data such as product information, customer information, and transaction records. A web client or browser is an application program that provides a graphical interface to view and interact with all the information available on the World Wide Web (WWW). The word browser originated as a generic term for user interfaces that let one browse text files online. An important component of the development process for an electronic commerce solution is testing one's resulting website pages, embedded code, and scripts on the dominant browsers available to the public.
