Abstract

Restricted substances including harmful chemicals can pose grave danger to people, the environment and companies caught using them. The recall of a product for use of dangerous substances can cause irretrievable damage to a company's reputation. Many restricted substances are of the group considered harmful to the environment and unfit for public exposure, creating new challenges for companies that manufacture and sell apparels. The industry has reacted by implementing an integrated approach and presenting a united front as it meets the requirements posed by local and international manufacturing regulation, international standards, chemical specifications and consumer product regulation. With increasing concern about the adverse affects on our health and environment from hazardous substances, several countries have enacted legislation and restrictions for a number of hazardous substances. The chapter first discusses the regulatory requirements in Canada, Europe, United States and related state and local requirements. The chapter then deals with the legal requirements of restricted substances associated with China standard, Korean certification, Japanese regulation, and regulation in Vietnam.
