Abstract

In this chapter we discuss quantitative and functional innate immunity defects mainly affecting neutrophils and monocytes. Patients carrying such disorders usually present early on life with recurrent/severe/opportunistic bacterial, fungal or mycobacterial infections. Specific microorganisms, infection sites, and abnormal types of immune responses should alert the clinician about innate immunity disorders. A more extensive clinical, diagnostic and therapeutic description of some well characterized forms of these diseases, including different types of neutropenia, defects of the oxidative metabolism (e.g., chronic granulomatous disease), defects of leukocyte adhesion, mycobacterial (e.g., IFNγ and IL-12/23 signalling pathways) and fungal infection susceptibility, is included in this chapter.
