Abstract

This chapter reviews the basic syntax of Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) and VBScript, including the most important functions built into VBA and VBScript and many custom functions that are ready for adding to one's own Outlook project. One of the major differences between VBA and VBScript is that the VBScript does not allow data-typing in variable or procedure declarations. When one types a space after “As” in a “Dim” statement, the VBA pops up a list of the possible ways to complete the statement. This feature—called the Auto List Members—is one of the “intellisense” features in VBA that can save the users hours of typing and can help avoid many errors. Intellisense helps the user to complete a statement or expression by offering a set of appropriate choices. When working with object variables, pressing the period (.) key is useful. Because variant-type variables support all kinds of operations, VBA cannot optimize the code when it compiles it. Therefore, using explicit data types can make the VBA code run more efficiently.
