Abstract

A clutch is a device that permits the smooth, gradual connection of two components moving relative to each other, such as shafts rotating at different speeds. A brake enables the controlled dissipation of energy to slow down, stop, or control the speed of a system. This chapter describes the basic principles of frictional clutches and brakes and outlines the design and selection procedures for disk clutches, disk, drum, and band brakes.
