Abstract

Brazil has extensive and decentralized food safety regulations managed by two main government bodies. The Food Safety requirements are generally aligned to international expectations and agreements, mainly Codex Alimentarius. Due to Brazil's role in the global food supply chain, there are many strict requirements published over guidance documents or regulations, especially for exporting companies. Factory layout assessment and approval by authorities is part of the registration process of a food factory. Federal general legislation is in general, less prescriptive than state, municipal or segmented regulations. Parts of the requirements are redundant over different documents.
