Abstract

In the modern military context, the term personal armor typically includes body armor (waistcoat or vest-like garments covering the torso), helmets (covering the cranium), face and eye protection (primarily visors, glasses, goggles), explosive ordnance disposal suits, and ballistic shields. However, additional protection may be provided to other areas of the body. In the United Kingdom, diverse occupations wear body armor including, but not limited to, military personnel, the police (including the Ministry of Defence Police) and security guards. The level of protection offered by personal armor varies according to the threat analysis that has been conducted. Using UK in-service military personal armor as a case study, this chapter describes typical body armor, helmets, face and eye protection, neck protection, and pelvic protection. Future trends are discussed and sources of further information provided.
