Abstract

This chapter examines some of the most important methods in optical microscopy for the identification of fibres, briefly discussing the underlying optical phenomena on which they are based and indicating areas where each might be advantageously applied. In addition, it considers some of the practical issues involved in preparing fibre specimens for microscopy, and straightforward procedures that can greatly simplify the process of making an unambiguous identification. A list of resources and further reading is provided.
