Abstract

Healthcare service is going through rapid changes from conventional hospitals into more distributed patient-centric approaches. The advances in technological growth are leading to a fast change of the healthcare vertical structure. Among different advancements, various communication technologies are empowered to provide customized and remote healthcare facilities. This chapter gives insight into the current communication technologies that are not fulfilling the significant demand put on communication networks by different smart healthcare applications. We also discuss how the emerging 5G networks are relied upon to help in smart healthcare service applications, and how they can fulfill the greater part of the technical demands, for example, super low latency, high data transfer capacity, super high reliability, high density, and high energy efficiency. As the smart healthcare market is being developed, the network services an enormous number of devices and machines with sensor-based applications. In emergencies, it will be necessary to execute massive machine-type communication, which is carried out by 5G healthcare services and Internet of Things (IoT) devices. Moreover, the chapter also covers the potential of blockchain technology to improve smart healthcare in various areas involving 5G and IoT. Research trends, challenges, and future research directions are explored.
