Abstract

With the best way to predict the future being simply to look at the past, the future for CIM is likely to be a continuance of the fairly slow evolution we have seen in the last eight years. However, this is not a bad thing, as time spent on getting the fundamental approach correct will be time well spent. The development of the various standards, particularly for communications, has to be a painstaking process. The potential evolution in this area, as well as in hardware (particularly workstation technology), is discussed. Artificial Intelligence (AI) will also have a part to play and the possibilities in simulation, the shop-floor and general integration are addressed.
