Abstract
The first identifiable reference to CIM was in 1969 by Dr Joseph Harrington. In spite of this the reality of integration has only had operational effect since around 1980. Since then a number of large companies have invested, often quite heavily, in the ability to transfer and control information throughout their organisation and there has been considerable progress in the definition of standards. However, it is still too early to produce the 'history of CIM' since for most organisations CIM is still in the future. Thus the following Section is effectively a mini-history of the significant milestones in the many areas which together have contributed to the evolution towards CIM.
