Abstract
This chapter explains the development of a basic media browser application for a digital media collection, using Visual Basic .NET and QuickTime. The chapter describes the essential design process involved in object-oriented programming (OOP) and the application of sound design methodology for real-world projects. One of the most convincing benefits of the OOP approach is the close synergy between the functionality and the software implementation of that functionality. The chapter reviews what functionality is required of the media browser and what objects are needed to implement it in the OOP. First of all, assuming that the collection of media files is organized in some kind of logical folder structure, a folder or directory navigator is needed so that one can find the way around the collection: a DirectoryNavigator object. Now that a DirectoryNavigator is available to locate a folder of interest, something like the right-hand panel of Windows Explorer is needed to view the media files in the folder. This is called the MediaDisplayPanel object.
