Abstract
This chapter explains the public health threats posed by bombings and industrial explosions. In recent years, bombings have become more sophisticated, frequent, and deadly. Recognizing and responding to suspicious packages or vehicles is essential knowledge, particularly for those working in industries or government facilities that are at higher risk of being targeted. First responders and healthcare providers must also be aware of the differences between responding to a bomb scene and to other disasters. The risks are unique, the patients are different, and the steps taken to properly manage the scene are distinctive. Reducing the morbidity and mortality associated with these threats requires careful planning, training, and execution. Industrial explosion preparedness has similar planning and response challenges. Industries at risk must accomplish physical security threat assessments, preparedness planning, and employee training. Industries with explosion risks should begin mitigating risk in the initial stages of process design. They should also be actively engaged in local emergency preparedness planning.
