Abstract

A detailed understanding about the acoustical process involved in bat echolocation may lead to further bio-inspired sonar innovations. The chapter begins with an overall review about echolocation in bats in terms of both biological and acoustical aspects followed by an introduction to how an echolocation process can be systematically modeled. We then extend the discussion to potential applications of bio-inspired sonar and the challenges faced in exploiting successfully engineered systems.
