Abstract
This study is a step towards the design of neuroprostheses using artificial biomimetic neural networks like the central pattern generator (CPG) we could find in the leech’s heartbeat system. We propose a resource-frugal implementation of CPG on a field-programmable gate array (FPGA) platform. Using Izhikevich’s neuron model and short-term plasticity synapse model, our implementation can host and mimic 500 CPGs in real time. Our results have been validated by comparing them to biological data. Our study shows a solid step towards hybridization of biological nervous system and artificial neural networks.
